Heal and Moisturize with Shea Butter

On this page, we will give you some suggestions on uses of our shea butter and hints for melting and pouring shea butter to avoid graininess upon re-crystallization.

How to Use our Shea Butter

For direct application to the skin, take a small amount in the palm of you hand. Rub your hands together to warm up the butter until it is smooth and liquid. Then apply to your skin.

If you are concerned about an oily feeling, use only a small amount or apply the shea butter before going to bed. Shea butter absorbs quickly into the skin, but there will be a few minutes that it feels oily.

Shea butter can also be applied to your hair. Some people apply it before washing to protect the hair from harsh shampoos. It can also be applied after washing as a conditioner. Apply it in the same manner as to the skin.

Melting and Pouring Shea Butter

There are important techniques to learn in order to keep the shea butter from becoming grainy when it is melted and re-crystallized. We do not recommend melting the butter completely. Melt butter in a stainless steel pan over medium heat until it is about 50% liquid. It is important to leave some solid pieces. Stir continuously until the shea butter thickens and lightens in color. The butter should be a thick yellow-green liquid. The thicker the liquid, the creamier the butter will be.

Pour the shea butter in the containers of your choice and let sit in a cool, dark place until ready for use. It is best to cool and store the shea butter below 50 degrees F, such as in a refrigerator. If you want to add essential oils, add them to the shea butter just before you pour it into the containers.
